IF I WERE PRESIDENT
Many a time i sit back and think about my beloved country Nigeria,how the colonialists and our fore fathers, foresaw that the country would be a force to reckon with when they came to an independence agreement. Initially i guess everyone would have felt a huge relief from the mighty hand of the colonials. Well, little did they know that we would become our own worst enemy. Fast forward into present day Nigeria, the common man thanks his stars if he can get upto 2 square meals per day. This is a big shame as we suffer in the midst of plenty. A man can hardly fulfil his destiny because those leaders at the top that should pave way for better living, indulge themselves in self-serving ambitions with the aim of enlarging their already bloated estates. This slipshod attitude constantly creates bottlenecks for the common man as it causes an imbalance in the economy. Sometimes i wonder if there is a secret oath of corruption our leaders swear before they enter office. Or maybe we Nigerians all have the corrupt gene, but in some it is recessive, while in others it is overtly dominant. So no matter what you do the ones with the dominant trait get to the top of government, or maybe the species with the recessive gene manifest dominant traits once they get to the helm of affairs. I wonder, what if i were president? Would i be better, even if i want to be, would the corrupt ones around me let me be? But i guess if i was commander in chief, i would adopt the partial method of rule and favour those around me. Lets look at it this way, i'm a medical student so obviously the health sector must be vibrant and all my incompetent colleagues would be kindly kicked out from work. My dad is in the army so i guess i will improve the security of the land by employment of qualified citizens into the forces, pay them good salaries and improve their standard of living. By doing that, i think they will be committed to duty and waste less time harassing civilians with any opportunity they get. My mum is a teacher so i'll make the educational environment more conducive for workers in the sector and also for the students. That way we'll have quality teachers and graduates. My elder sister is an engineer, so i must obviously rejuvenate the ministry of works and housing. I guess this way we'll have good infrastructure. My younger sister is an accountant so the banking sector and the economy must be stable so as to guarantee her job security. My cousin is an insurer, so i would pump money into the insurance sector to make their presence more palpable by citizens. Some of my relatives and friends are currently unemployed, so i'll try to create job opportunities so they don't resort to crime. Before they get employed they must have some cash in their pockets to satisfy their needs, so i'll mandate the senate to pass a bill for payment of the unemployed. My country's thirst is quenched by oil, so the oil sector must be privatized and we must have at least 20 functional refineries for our use and for exportation to anyone who wants to buy refined oil. I have relatives round the country, so i'll sanction any governor who due to under performance makes life hard for them. Obviously, there must be 24 hrs light for everybody, because if only me has light the country would be crippled and stagnated. Besides i don't want overcrowding in my house because all those without light would be disturbing me with their presence. There would be declaration of public holidays, and of course i want people to feel me so there would be free chow for all Nigerians once every 2 weeks. I think with this everyone should be satisfied. Any of my friends that feels aggrieved because i have not touched his/her side, just buzz me and i will do you and your field well. All these would only be possible if i were president........Ayo Babatunde.
