Brad And Angelina Win Payout Over Split Claim

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have accepted undisclosed damages from the News of the World over false allegations that they were separating.

The couple did not attend the hearing at London's High Court where solicitor-advocate Keith Schilling told Mr Justice Eady that News Group Newspapers accepted that each of the allegations had been "false and intrusive".

Pitt and Jolie brought an action for misuse of private information and breach of the 1998 Data Protection Act over a front page that said "Pitts all over".

Mr Schilling said the newspaper, which argued that it acted in good faith, had agreed to publish an apology and pay the couple costs and damages.

They intend to donate the cash to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Mr Schilling said the article stated that the couple had visited divorce lawyers in December 2009 to begin thrashing out a separation deal.

It said an agreement had been reached to divide assets of £205m and provide custody and visitation rights in relation to their six children.

It claimed both actors had signed the agreement in January 2010, making their separation imminent.

The solicitor told the court the couple's Los Angeles lawyers wrote to News Group informing them that the allegations had been false.

But the next issue the News of the World published another article "Brange Leak War", that reported the earlier allegations and stated the couple had argued about who had leaked details of their break up to the press.

Mr Schilling said the actors then requested the newspaper publish an apology and retraction.

When the News of the World failed to publicly retract the allegations and apologise for them - thereby leaving their readers in the dark as to the true position - the couple felt they had no alternative than to sue," he said.

"Today's victory marks the end of the litigation brought by Brad and Angelina.
